Edna Almeta Hughes, 97, was called to her Heavenly rest Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015, at ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano. She was born on Dec. 30, 1917 in Colfax, Washington, the youngest daughter of Carl and Maria (Heinz) Lautenschleger.

On Dec. 25, 1938, Edna was united in marriage to Wilbur James Hughes in St. John, Washington. He preceded her in death on April 7, 1995. Their 56-year union was blessed with one daughter, Kristine Diane.

Edna worked as the executive assistant to the dean of students at Santa Rosa Junior College for over 25 years. She enjoyed serving her Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, especially during the 43 years the family lived in Santa Rosa. She was a longstanding member of a weekly bridge group, and her many travels, short and long, were born from her curiosity in the wonder of God’s creation.

Survivors include her daughter, Kristine (Michael) Schram, Bowler; two grandchildren, Rebecca (Steve) Honeyfield, San Diego, California, and Jeffrey (Angela) Schram, Waukesha; five great-grandchildren, Briana, Alexis, Emma, Ryan and Elijah; two nieces and one nephew, Cammy (Edward) Repp, Spokane, Washington, Greg (Denise) Anderson, Palm Springs, California, and Felicia Lauten, San Antonio, Texas; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Edna was preceded in death by one brother, Walt Lauten, and four sisters, Clara Anderson, Aldena Lauten, Louise Lauten, and Alma (Don) Anderson; and a grandson, Matthew Schram.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bowler. The Rev. Michael Schram will officiate. Interment will be in Santa Rosa at a later date. Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015, from 1:30 p.m. until time of the service.

Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg, is assisting the family with arrangements.

The family thanks the loving care she received this past year while a resident of Homme Home for the Aging, Wittenberg, and the compassionate care Edna received while a patient of ThedaCare Medical Center, Shawano. To God be the glory.
