John David Hart, M.D., passed away Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, after a six-year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
John was born in Sac City, Iowa, to the late William and Erin (Cooney) Hart. He was raised in Hopkinton, Iowa. In 1962, he graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. On Aug. 8, 1964, John was united in marriage to Donna Stoughton in Farley, Iowa. In 1967, John graduated from the University of Iowa School of Medicine. Following a year of internship in Flint, Michigan, John was inducted into the United States Army, where he served as a flight surgeon in Vietnam for one year.
Upon his discharge from the service, John and Donna moved to Shawano where he joined Cantwell-Peterson Clinic, now ThedaCare. He practiced medicine for 40 years, never once having a sick day. John worked as a preceptor for the University of Wisconsin Medical School, mentoring senior medical school students. He was a lifelong runner, participating in four marathons. John enjoyed golfing, downhill skiing, days at the cottage, bird hunting with his sons and his dog, Race, being outdoors and sailing. He enjoyed traveling with Donna, especially their many trips to Europe. He loved practicing medicine, his patients and his colleagues. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. It “warmed his heart” that his children and their families are so close with each other.
John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna; their children, David (Debbie) Hart, Susan (Michael) Daniel, Elizabeth (Aki Avelino) Hart, Sarah (Kevin) Hart McGuinnis, Matthew (Meghan) Hart, and Andrew (Libby) Hart; grandchildren, Tyler and Amy Hart, Quinn, Erin and Sean Daniel, Anika Avelino, Madeleine and Keira McGuinnis, Ava, Mya and Becker Hart, Norah and Isla Hart. He is further survived by his brother, Robert (Nancy) Hart; his cousin, Pat (Romelia) Cooney; brother-in-law, Dr. Richard (Loretta) Stoughton; sister-in-law, Mary Stoughton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Luke Ferris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the Shawano American Legion Post 117. Visitation will be held at Swedberg Funeral Home on Friday, Aug. 7, 2015, from 4-8 p.m. and again on Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
As a final selfless act, John donated his brain to the Wisconsin Brain Donor Program for the study of Alzheimer’s disease. Donations can be forwarded to UW Foundation Wisconsin, ADRC (Fund #12586691) US Bank Lockbox 78807, Milwaukee, WI 53278-0807.
The family would like to thank Birch Hill Care Center and Maple Lane Care Center — both facilities provided extraordinary care for John; Dr. Beth Gillis, for her compassionate care as a physician and friend; and all of John’s patients, who were such an important part of his life. A special thanks to John and Donna’s many friends for their support through the past six years.
