Joan Kranzusch (Bazile)

Joan D. Kranzusch, 82, of Shawano, formally of Black Creek, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014. Joan was born on July 24, 1932, in Split Rock to the late Joe and Annie (Kersten) Bazile. Joan was united in marriage on May 28, 1955, to Elmer Kranzusch in Appleton. The couple owned and operated Village Bakery in Black Creek for 18 years before moving to Shawano. She loved cooking and baking, even after retiring from the bakery. Joan loved rides in the Model A and was a member of the Nicolet Model A Club.

Joan is survived by her husband of 59 years, Elmer; her son, Mark (Karen) Kranzusch, of Shawano; Mark’s son, Steve (Darla Dick) Kastning and Steve’s children, Allen and Aliviah; Mark’s daughter, Brenda (Jeff) Heath and Brenda’s children, Whitney, Vanessa, and Isaac. Joan is further survived by son-in-law, Erik Femal, of DePere, and his children, Tim, Brian and Kristina Femal; a daughter-in-law, Janean Kranzusch, of Appleton; two brothers, Gary Bazile, of Center Valley, and Joe (Anna) Bazile, of Manawa; as well as other relatives and friends.

Joan is preceded in death by two children, Glen Kranzusch and Marsha Femal; her parents; and a brother, Myron Bazile.

Visitation will be held at Divine Savior Lutheran Church in Shawano, on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014, from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service, which will be held at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Kuehn officiating. Entombment will be at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton. Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Richard A. Melcher

Richard A. “Dick” Melcher, 76, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, Dec. 8, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Dick went to spend Christmas with Jesus this year.

Dick was born Dec. 14, 1937, in the town of Lake, Wisconsin, a son of the late William Melcher and Lillian (Belling) Melcher-Meyer. He attended school in South Milwaukee. Following school, he entered the United States Navy where he served for two years.

Upon returning from the service, Dick was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, the former Caroline Kroll, on July 19, 1958, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Milwaukee. The couple lived in South Milwaukee after their marriage until 1970, when they moved to Oak Creek. They later moved to Leopolis, and in 2011, they moved to Shawano.

Dick was employed as a truck driver for many years, and later worked with his wife, Caroline, in an adult family homecare facility.

Dick enjoyed various hobbies, including hunting, bowling, shooting pool and gardening. He also enjoyed camping and spending time in the great outdoors. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Brewers. Dick was a Christian.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Caroline, of Shawano; four children, Richard A. (Rachel) Melcher, of Racine, Peggy Melcher, Jeffery Melcher and Lisa (Fred) Meisner, all of Shawano; 10 grandchildren, Crystal, Dayna (Pete), Jeffrey Jr., Roni (Payton), Austin, Shana, twins William and Joseph, Brady and Robert. He is further survived by four great-grandchildren, Peter, Anthoni, Madison and Emma; two sisters, Norma Krumnow, of Greenfield, and Lorraine Watry, of Port Washington; and many nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by a brother, William “Bill,” and two sisters, Helen and Lucille.

A time to remember and celebrate the life of Dick Melcher will be held on his birthday, Sunday, Dec. 14, at 4:30 p.m. at Mickelson Funeral and Cremation Service of Shawano. Pastor Tony Gulbrandsen will officiate. Relatives and friends may call at Mickelson’s on Sunday from 2 p.m. until the time of service that afternoon.

Sonja J. Maas

Sonja J. Maas died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, at Luther Manor in Milwaukee.

Born in 1923 in Bergen, Norway, she immigrated to the United States with her parents, John and Sanny Johnson, through Ellis Island and settled in Jamaica, New York, in 1927. She moved to Washington, D.C., with her father and mother in 1941. She attended the University of Maryland and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Social Studies in 1945 and a Master of Arts degree in Education in 1946.

She received her Certificate of Naturalization in June 1948 and taught school in Maryland. She was finishing her Ph.D. and needed a course in Scandinavian area studies to complete her thesis, which took her to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She had been offered a position in the state department in Scandinavian Affairs when she finished but chose to marry Duane instead and settled in Wisconsin. She often said she got a Mrs. instead of a Ph.D.

She married Duane H. Maas in March 1950. She held teaching jobs in Middleton, Wisconsin; Houston, Texas; Peekskill, New York; Owensboro, Kentucky; Plainfield, Illinois; and Shawano, retiring after 40 years of teaching in 1988.

Upon retirement from teaching in 1988, she concentrated most of her time and efforts for the Republican Party. She worked for both Gov. Tommy Thompson and Rep. Mark Green. She was a member of the Presidents Club and attended two Republican National conventions as a delegate from Wisconsin in 1996 and 2000.

She helped form the Literacy Council of Shawano County and served as a board member of the Friends of the Shawano County Library. She also served as a board member of Homme Home, a nonprofit Christian nursing home.

In 2004, she moved to Pewaukee, until moving to Luther Manor in April 2012. A special thank you to Luther Manor and to the Hospice Care for their tender attention to Sonja.

She is survived by her husband, Duane H.; her sons, Jon (Martha), Duane A. (Kay), and Thomas (Susan); as well as her grandchildren, T.J., Bill (Liz), Charlie, Katherine, Jon David, Nicholas, Benjamin (Rachel), Molly, and Hannah; and great-grandchild, Mika.

To celebrate her life, a memorial service will be held at Cross of Life Lutheran Church at 20700 W. North Ave. in Brookfield, Wisconsin, on Dec. 29. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. with the memorial service at 5:30 p.m. Reception to follow.

Phyllis I. Knowles

Phyllis Ione Knowles, 76, of Tilleda, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, in Weston. She was born on July 23, 1938, in Milwaukee, the daughter of the late Harold and Jeanette (Lory) Appleby, and has lived in this area for the past 14 years. On Feb. 19, 1955, she was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Knowles in Oceanside, California. Phyllis owned and operated a catering service, The Elegant Farmer, and also worked for Northwest and United Airlines. Phyllis was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marion and was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Gresham. Phyllis was also a former Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, an avid reader and enjoyed watching cooking shows, fishing and spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Bob; four children, Vicky (David) Haas, of Bowler, Patricia (Leslie) Turner, of Antigo, Roberta (Curtis) Baldwin, of Gillett, and James (Catherine) Knowles, of Marion. She is further survived by nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Jan Manule.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, at the St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Gresham with the Rev. David McElroy, O.Praem, officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Lifeson McCaslin Wudtke

Lifeson McCaslin Wudtke, 4, of Mattoon, passed away on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, at home surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with many medical issues. Lifeson was born on Feb. 14, 2010, in Wausau, to Nicholas and Jenene (Forstner) Wudtke. Lifeson loved to snuggle and be held by his parents, especially while being read to by his dad. Lifeson also enjoyed when his brother Maiden would sing to him while rocking him in the rocking chair.

Lifeson is survived by his parents, Nick and Jenene (Forstner) Wudtke; one brother, Maiden Wudtke, 7; his maternal grandparents, Peter Forstner, of Tilleda, and Robin White, of Shawano; his paternal grandparents, Don and Jeanne Wudtke, of Shawano; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends of the family.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Tilleda with the Rev. Melinda Shriner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at Swedberg Funeral Home in Gresham on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, from 4-7 p.m. and again at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

The family would like to thank the staff at Antigo Clinic and LeRoyer Hospice for everything they’ve done for Lifeson.

Merlin R. Wruck

Merlin “Merlie” Wruck, 62, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, while watching his beloved Packers. Merle was born in Shawano on April 13, 1952, the son of the late Reuben and Phyllis (Laude) Wruck. He attended school in Gresham, and after graduating, he went on to attend UW-Oshkosh, receiving a degree in business. Merle started his working career with Philp Morris as a salesman. In 1984, he came home to the family farm, which he operated until July 2012 when he suffered a stroke. While running the farm, he also worked at Service Motors in Seymour and Pulaski Chase Co Op. Merle enjoyed snowmobiling and was able to do that every winter; he especially enjoyed going up north on the trails with many friends. He also enjoyed going to the Spinning Wheel every Sunday with his friends. Merle loved to watch the Packers and had attended many games over the years. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and taking in the Michigan race every year. Merle was also a member of St. John Lutheran Church-Hermansfort, where he was baptized and confirmed.

Merlin is survived by his son, Parker, of Shawano; two brothers, Larry (Patricia) Wruck and Ron (Linda) Wruck; a nephew, Jared (Fiancé Karmin VandeHey) Wruck; two nieces, Amanda (Kyle) Meulemans and Tina Wruck; a great-nephew, Jonathon Ries; and a great-niece, Jessica Meggers.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents, special friend Brenda Bierman, nephew Sam Wruck and great-nephew Eric Ries.

Services will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at St. John’s Lutheran Church-Hermansfort with the Rev. Steve Conradt officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with the service.

John J. Schmidt

John J. (Jack) Schmidt, 78, of Thornton, passed away Tuesday evening, Dece. 9, 2014, at Shawano Medical Center following a courageous two year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jack was born October 17, 1936 in the town of Herman, Shawano County, a son of the late Raymond and Laura (Ready) Schmidt. He attended the Leopolis Grade School and graduated from Marion High School in 1955. Following graduation, Jack delivered milk until he entered the U.S. Army. He served his country from January 1957 until December 1958, serving 18 months in Germany.

Upon returning from service, Jack married the former Ruby Schultz on Feb. 7, 1959, at St. Mary’s Church in Leopolis. Jack worked road construction in Milwaukee and Madison and several locations throughout the state. He owned a milk route from 1962 to 1972, and also owned and operated Schmidt CB Sales and Service in the 1970s. He was a semi-truck driver for Schneider and Carolina Freight, and delivered fire trucks for American La France, Seagrave, and Marion Body Works until August 2014.

Jack was a good Catholic man who served on the Shawano County Board, Shawano County Agricultural Society Board, Maple Lane Board and Solid Waste Committee until resigning in May 2014 for health reasons. He enjoyed spending time in the woods with his family, making maple syrup, and cutting wood.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ruby; his children, Amy (James) Bohr, Patricia (Andrew) Czarnecki, Michael (Terri) Schmidt, David Schmidt, and J.J. (Rhonda) Schmidt, all of Shawano; grandchildren Nicole (Jeff Korth) Raddant, Ashley (Josh) Wheeler, Jordan Raddant, Jonathon Bohr, Katelyn Bohr, Jerod (Courtney Zook) Schmidt, Jacob (Jordan) Coe, Noah Schmidt and Mariah Schmidt; and step-grandchildren Josh Moesch, Amy Drohen and Tyler (McKenzie) Moesch. He is further survived by his great-grandchildren, Ella and Samuel, and two expected babies in March; his sisters, Mary Steinke and Donna Jaeger; and brothers Warren “Corny” Schmidt, James Schmidt, and Robert Schmidt.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Laura Schmidt; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard and Verona Schultz; one brother in infancy; brothers-in-law Allen Steinke and James Jaeger; and brother and sisters-in-law Victor and Adline Schultz, Myron and Lila Radtke, Edward and Edgar Schultz, and Oscar and Opal Schultz.

A funeral Mass for Jack Schmidt will be celebrated on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano with Fr. Luke Ferris, celebrant. Entombment will be at the Sacred Heart Mausoleum with full military honors. Relatives and friends may call at Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano on Thursday, December 11, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. A Parish Wake Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at Sacred Heart Church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.

Robert W. Doxtator

Robert W. Doxtator, 63, of Gresham, passed away on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, in Green Bay. He was born in Algoma on April 18, 1951, the son of the late Benjamin and Bessie (Davids) Doxtator. Robert proudly served in the United States Air Force and is a member of the Mohican Veterans. On Dec. 22, 1990, in Waukesha, Robert was united in marriage to Debra Olejniczak, and they made Gresham their home in 2001. Robert previously lived in Alabama and Milwaukee. He had his sport pilot license, built his own airplane and was a member of the EAA.

Robert is survived by his wife, Debra; four children, Josh Doxtator, of South Milwaukee, Danny Doxtator, of Green Bay, Robert (Faye) Cartwright, of Century, Florida, and Kriste Goldsmith, of Germantown; and five grandchildren. He is further survived by his brothers and sisters, William (Wilma) Doxtator, Irvin (Nancy) Doxtator, Anderson Doxtator, Wilma DeMain, Penny (William) Thomas and Howard Doxtator.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sisters, Loraine Stilwell, Wilma’s twin brother, Wilford, Vickie Millard and Rhonda Brooks.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Gresham with the Rev. Ernie Geeting officiating with military rites conduct by the Mohican Veterans. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service.

Jean V. Westphal

Jean V. Westphal, 94, Appleton, passed away at her home on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014.

Jean was born on Aug. 9, 1920, to the late Paul and Emma (Radtke) Dobratz in Zachow. She married Howard Westphal, and he preceded her in death in 1993. Jean liked to play a mean game of cards as well as playing Yahtzee and giving to the slot machines. She was an avid Brewers fan and never missed watching a game on TV. She spent countless hours enjoying time at Rhonda’s home and cheering Joy on as her No. 1 fan at league bowling.

She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and cherished time spent at family occasions.

We love you Grammy/Grammy Great!

She will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Rhonda (Dennis) Baus and Joy (Claude) Hietpas; grandsons, Nick (Rikki) Baus, Tony (Jen) Baus and Jonathan (Jodi) Baus; great-grandsons, Cole, Graham and Maxwell; great-granddaughters, Gracie and Isabella; sisters, Dolly (Robert) Ritchie and Katy Knaack; a sister-in-law, June Buss; and many other family and friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; a sister, Nona Kvaley; and other beloved family members.

A funeral service for Jean will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church, Appleton, with the Rev. Lloyd Luedeman officiating. Entombment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Friends may visit the family Sunday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Brettschneider Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel, 606 N. Oneida St., Appleton, and again Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of service directly at the church.

Mae Jean Bahrke

Mae Jean Bahrke, 83, of the town of Belle Plaine, Shawano County, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014, at Shawano Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family. She had been a patient there for the past week.

Mae Jean was born on June 4, 1931, in Shawano, daughter of the late Edward and Elsie (Kanzenbach) Dittman. She attended St. James Lutheran Grade School and graduated from Shawano High School in 1949. Following school, she was employed at the superintendent’s office for the Shawano School District. Mae Jean left Shawano and moved to Milwaukee, where she was employed by General Electric Company. On Nov. 29, 1952, she was united in marriage to William Bahrke in Racine.

Following their marriage, the couple lived in Milwaukee for one year until Bill finished his studies at Marquette University. In 1953, the couple moved to Long Island, New York. They later moved to Kingston and Athens, Tennessee; Beaumont, Texas; Moonachie and Ramsey, New Jersey; Chicago; Kansas City, Missouri; Avon, Connecticut; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Bill had been employed as an engineer for Dravo Constructors Inc. in Pittsburgh until the last 10 years of his career, retiring in 1989. He and Mae Jean then moved to Shawano in 1990.

Mae Jean was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She loved to travel, working outdoors, attending garden club meetings and bowling. She very much liked to spend time with her children and grandchildren.

Mae Jean is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, William H. “Bill” Bahrke, of the town of Belle Plaine; three daughters, Joan Bahrke, of Farmington, Connecticut, Susan (Ted) Bell, of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Nancy (Christopher) Hyatt, of Glenshaw, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Katelyn and Jeffrey Bell, both of Iowa, and Jonathan, Andrew and Anna Hyatt, of Pennsylvania; one brother, LeRoy (Gloria) Dittman, of Salem, Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano with the Rev. Luke Ferris as celebrant. Entombment will take place at the Sacred Heart Mausoleum. Relatives and friends may call at Mickelson Funeral and Cremation Service of Shawano on Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, from 4-7 p.m. and on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials in Mae Jean’s name to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or ThedaCare at Home Hospice.

Albert E. Reinke Jr.

Albert E. Reinke Jr., 84, of Pulaski, died on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014.

Albert was born on Jan. 28, 1930, in the town of Angelica, the son of the late Albert and Hertha A. (Wudtke) Reinke Sr. On Jan. 5, 1950, he was united in marriage to Pauline “Dolly” Zielinski in Shawano. Albert was a lifelong member of the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in the town of Angelica.

Albert is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dolly; a son, Jeff; grandchildren, Jordan Reinke, of Shawano, and Jeana (Dalton) Henn, of Navarino. He is further survived by his brothers and sister, Ervin (Gena) Reinke, of Pulaski, Harvey (Judy) Reinke, of Pulaski, and Florence Rueckert, of Cecil; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Albert was preceded in death by two daughters, Sandra and Susie Reinke; his parents; brothers, Maynard Reinke and Richard (Maxine) Reinke; sister, Helen (Joe) Bluma; and his brother-in-law, Wallin Rueckert.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in the town of Angelica with the Rev. Phillip Gieger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at Swedberg-Wendt Funeral Home in Bonduel on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, from 4-8 p.m. and again at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

John A. Boivin III

John A. Boivin III, 30, of Neopit, died on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014.

On July 31, 1984, in Shawano, John was born to John Boivin Jr. and the late Rayma Heath. John spent his whole life in the Neopit area, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to the lake lot. He loved driving in the woods and watching the Green Bay Packers. John was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Neopit.

John is survived by his father, John (Deanna) Boivin Jr., of Neopit; paternal grandmother, Dorla Boivin, of Neopit; siblings, Wendell (significant other, Wanda) Boivin, of Shawano, Dean Davis Derek-James, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Daro James, of Kansas City, Kansas, Dyan James-Anderson, of Neopit, Desiree James, of Milwaukee; and special auntie, Janice Reed. He is further survived by many aunties, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rayma Heath; paternal grandfather, John Boivin Sr.; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Heath; his brother, Darby King; and his sister, Dawn King.

Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Neopit with the Rev. David McElroy, O. Praem, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Julaine Samanta Roy

Julaine Samanta Roy (aka Sarah Steinberg and Sarah Cohen), 85, passed away May 5, 2014, in Baltimore, Maryland.

She was born to Bernard and Mildred Smith in Winona, Minnesota, on Feb. 19, 1929, and graduated from high school in St. Charles, Minnesota. After studying at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Design and Bethany Fellowship in Bloomington, Minnesota, she lived in Jamaica for seven years as a missionary before marrying Rama Behera, who became Rama Samanta Roy and then Avraham Cohen, in 1965.

Musically inclined and very artistic, she had a very beautiful voice and a lifelong interest in architecture. A long-time resident of Shawano, she most recently resided in Baltimore.

Julaine was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Kendall, and daughter, Deborah.

She is survived by her sisters, Lois Jean Loomis-Theesfeld and Genene Gordish; her husband; her son; and three grandchildren.

Julaine was laid to rest in Beth El Memorial Park in Randallstown, Maryland.

Anna May Opperman

Anna May Opperman, 76, of Shawano, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at home, with her family at her side while “Silent Night” played in the background.

Anna was born on Aug. 31, 1938, in Zionsville, Indiana, the daughter of the late Orval and Helen (Nagle) Case. Anna met her future husband, Frederick H. Opperman, on a blind date at a dance hall. On Nov. 25, 1960, she and Fred were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church in Menasha.

Anna had many hobbies, including reading, baking, cooking, traveling with her family, and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s events. She also enjoyed being outdoors, doing lawn work, gardening, tending to her flowers and watching the birds. She was an amazing woman who loved her family and always looked forward to the Oppermans’ monthly family gatherings.

Anna was a faithful member of St. Jakobi Lutheran Church, where she was active with the Ladies Aid. She was also formerly a part of the Farm Progress Days team and was a former 4-H leader.

Anna is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Fred; three children, Margaret Jordan Opperman, Sue (Gary) Zaddack and Mike (Cathy) Opperman, all of Shawano; one son-in-law, Chuck Dunnam, of Shawano; six grandchildren, Cassie (Zak) Weber, Bryan and Erika Dunnam, Lee (Ashley) Zaddack, Cory (Amber) Zaddack and Grace Opperman; two great-granddaughters, Ehlana and Zoie; three siblings, Betty (Glen) Miller, of Westfield, Indiana, John (Nancy) Case, of Mount Vernon, Indiana, and Barbara (Leon) Hamblin, of Westfield, Indiana, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Anna was preceded in death by two daughters, Laura Dunnam and Carmella, in infancy; a grandchild, Baby Zaddack; her parents; and a sister-in-law, Pat Case.

Anna’s family would like to extend a special thank you to John Beversdorf for everything he has done for the family.

A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at the St. Jakobi Lutheran Church in the town of Richmond with the Rev. Travis Kleinschmidt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 4-8 p.m. and again on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

William J. Hoffman

William J. “Bill” Hoffman, Appleton, formerly of Gresham, 91, passed away on Monday, Dec. 15, 2014.

Bill dedicated his life to God, country and family. He was born on May 23, 1923, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Henry and Gertrude (Forster) Hoffman. Bill grew up in the Appleton area, where he graduated from St. Joseph Catholic Grade School, and then from Appleton High School in 1941. Shortly after graduation, Bill joined the Wisconsin Telephone Co., where he spent 41 years until retiring in 1982.

A lifelong patriot that flew the American flag every day, Bill answered his country’s call to military service on Oct. 14, 1942, and served in the U.S. Army until Dec. 31, 1945, during World War II.

On Aug. 21, 1948, Bill married the love of his life, Geraldine “Gerrie” Schabow, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Bill and Gerrie were soulmates, and enjoyed almost 64 years of marriage. Following Bill’s retirement, Bill and Gerrie built their retirement home on the Lower Red Lake in Gresham. They enjoyed many seasons in Gresham and winters in Florida. Bill was a staunch Catholic, was a daily Communicant for many years, and lived his faith every day. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church while in Appleton, where he served on multiple committees, was an usher and one of the first Eucharistic ministers. Bill was also a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church while he lived in Gresham.

He was very proud of the 1930 Model A that he restored, and was a member of the local Model A Ford Club. Bill was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 607, the Allouez Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, the Harvey Pierre VFW Post 2778, the Gresham Lions Club and the Wisconsin Telephone Pioneers.

Bill is survived by “his three girls,” Therese “Tese” (Dennis) Pullman, of Kimberly, Lynn (Gary) Bayness, of Appleton, and Mary Kris “Krisi” (Dan) Burich, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; four grandchildren, Tricia Harlow, of Little Chute, Nancy (David) Wilcox, of Shiocton, Maj. William “Bill” (Crystal) Burich, U.S. Air Force, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Molly Burich, of Princeton, New Jersey; seven great-grandchildren, Brandon and Stephanie Harlow, Sydney, Cole and Bennett Wilcox, Caden and Hailey Burich; sister-in-law, Elayne Schabow, of Appleton; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by “his bride” as he always called Gerrie, in July 2012; his parents; his “kid sister,” Germaine (Carl) Forslund; brothers-in-law, Stuart (Hatie) Schabow, Lloyd “Lefty” Schabow and Arthur Schabow Jr.

The funeral liturgy for Bill will be held at 3:15 pm Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 410 W. Lawrence St., Appleton, with military honors to follow with the VFW Post 2778. The Rev. John Holly, a close family friend for over 34 years, and Deacon C.F. Dedman will be officiating. Burial will take place at the parish cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday at the church from 1:15 pm until the time of Mass.

Helen Mary Johanek

Helen M. Johanek, 90, of Shawano, died on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014.

Helen was born on July 15, 1924, in Oconto Falls, the daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Novak) Chlopek. On Nov. 24, 1945, Helen was united in marriage to Alois L. Johanek at St. Kasimir Catholic Church in Krakow. Alois preceded her in death on May 21, 2003.

Helen’s faith was a very important part of her life. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as well as the St. Ann’s Society of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Helen enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening and loved polka dancing. She enjoyed cooking, and her specialties included dumplings, cinnamon rolls and apple pie. Her family and friends were always welcome at her table.

Helen had a contagious smile and attitude, and loved visiting with her family, friends and new people she met. She enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas. Helen loved her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren, whom she referred to as her “little ones.”

Helen is survived by seven children, Frank (Wendy) Johanek, of Elm Grove, Alois (Lynn) Johanek Jr., of Shawano, Theresa Johanek, of Grafton, Marilyn (Dennis) Olson, of Shawano, Rose (Jerry) Mehlberg, of Hurricane, Utah, Alice (Len) Vander Wyst, of Appleton, and Helen (Pete) Pavalko, of Cedarburg; 13 grandchildren, Benjamin, Nicholas (Amanda), Alexander, Matthew, Scott, Ryan (Amity), Ashley (Joe), Jessica (Tim), Jacqueline, Alissa (Steve), Landon, Parker and Porter; five great-grandchildren, Jackson, Arianna, Geneva, Hannah and Ayana. She is further survived by one sister, Clara Rank, of Gillett, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Alois; infant son, George; her parents; and six brothers and sisters, Sophie, Walter, Edward, Charles, Stanley and Caroline.

A funeral service for Helen will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano with the Rev. Luke Ferris, Rev. Al Veik and Rev. Don Thimm officiating. Burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in the town of Waukechon. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

EddaMae Bohardt, 79, of Shawano, died on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014.

EddaMae was born on Sept. 11, 1935, in Tigerton, the daughter of the late Earl and Wilma (Reinhart) Kauffman. On Aug. 4, 1951, EddaMae was united in marriage to Otis “Walter” Bohardt Jr. at Peace United Church of Christ. Walter preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 2010. EddaMae was a cook in several local restaurants, including the L & L for 35 years. She enjoyed crocheting and tending to her flowers.

EddaMae is survived by four children, Bob (Barb) Bohardt, of Shawano, Resa (Daniel) Petroski, of Wausau, Randy Bohardt, of Shawano and Kurt Bohardt, of Shawano. She is further survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond (Ziggy) Kauffman, of Michigan; one sister, Roseann (Bill) Herman, of Tilleda; a special friend, Babe; and other relatives.

EddaMae was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; one son, Donald; one brother, Ronny; and one sister, Corrine.

A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to ThedaCare at Home Hospice and Dr. Qualheim for the great care given to Mom.
