Daniel Terkel, 88, of Shawano, formerly of Milwaukee, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, Dec. 14, 2013, at ManorCare of Shawano, where he had been a resident for the past 2 1/2 years.

Dan was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Milwaukee, a son of the late Allen and Florence (Lauer) Terkel.

In 1943, he entered the United States Army and served during World War II as a tank driver. He served in the European African Theatre of action. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

On Oct. 5, 1946, he was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Behnke at the Veterans Administration chapel in Milwaukee. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Milwaukee for many years. Dan had been employed as a commercial painter in Milwaukee. Following retirement, Dan and Dorothy moved to Shawano in 1999.

Dan’s hobbies included watching old war movies, painting, restoring and refinishing antique furniture. His beloved wife, Dorothy, preceded him in death on March 24, 2007.

Dan is survived by one brother in-law, Richard (Sharon) Behnke, of Winona, Minn.; a sister in-law, Betty (LeRoy) Lemke, of Ocala, Fla.; many nieces and nephews; and his very special friends, Bob and Audrey Greub, of Shawano.

He was preceded in death by daughter, Suzanne, and three sisters.

A time to gather and celebrate the life of Dan Terkel will be held on Saturday, Dec. 28 from 10-11 a.m. at Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano. Jim Lonick, Lay Minister of Worship will conduct services at 11 a.m.
