James R. Heinz

James R. Heinz, 89, of Shawano, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2015 in Shawano. Jim was born on June 25, 1925 in Shawano, the son of the late Gus and Esther (Ludolph) Heinz.

Jim loved Shawano and lived here for most of his 89 years. The Heinz family has strong foundations in the Shawano community. Jim’s father was the pharmacist that owned the Heinz Drug Store on Main Street for many years. In 1942, while Jim was in high school, he played on the Shawano High championship football team. When his triplet grandsons Mike, Todd and Scott Heinz helped lead the Shawano football team to a conference championship in 2010, Jim was able to see the Heinz name be part of a successful football program 68 years later.

While still a senior at Shawano High School, Jim was drafted into World War II. He joined the Navy and travelled throughout the South Pacific. After the war, Jim attended the University of Washington where he earned a degree in forestry. His love for the outdoors brought him back to Wisconsin. He became the head forester for Tigerton Lumber Company. In 1957, Jim met and married his wife of 57 years, Pauline Zander, who worked as a medical technician at the Clintonville Hospital. Sadly, Pauline passed away six months ago.

In 1965, Jim took a new position with the Menominee Tribal Enterprises as the chief forester. The opportunity to manage one of the most pristine forests in the country offered huge rewards and many challenges. Jim loved the forest and working with the Menominee people. He had great respect for both and considered himself a member of the community, and was proud to work side by side with them.

In 1975, after the seizure of the Alexian Brothers Novitiate, Jim and Pauline made the decision to leave Wisconsin and moved to Calumet, Michigan. Jim worked for Universal Oil Products as the forest manager. As luck would have it, Jim reconnected with former Menominee leaders and returned to MTE as president in 1976. He then finished out his career with MTE, retiring in 1986. Jim took much pride in managing the well-respected forests of the Menominee. He still enjoyed taking drives through the reservation and visited the mill as recently as this May.

While in his retirement Jim began his own consulting business, Heinz Forestry. It allowed for him, to once again, be in the woods appreciating the forests and appraising the timber.

Jim was also active as a member of the Shawano County Board of Commissioners for many years. He very much enjoyed contributing to the community and voicing his opinions. Mostly, Jim was a kind, outspoken, storyteller that was beloved by his family and many friends. He will be greatly missed.

Jim is survived by his children, James (Deb) Heinz Jr., of Shawano, Paula (Mike) Motzko, of Minnesota, Mike (Joni) Heinz, of Neenah, and Linda (George) Adams, of Wausau; 12 grandchildren, Jimmy (Lindsey) Heinz, Andy Heinz, Eric (Kylie) Heinz, Mike Heinz, Scott Heinz, Todd Heinz, Anne Rae Motzko, Sam Motzko, Wil Heinz, Bethany Heinz, Emily Adams and Ben Adams. He is further survived by four great-grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Pauline, his parents, one brother and three sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano with the Rev. Luke Ferris officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 117.

Memorials can be directed to St. Anthony Food Pantry in Neopit or Shawano Pathways for the Olga Brener Woods Project.

Evelyn Magdalene Hoffman Bohl, 92, passed away peacefully Monday, May 18, 2015, at the home of her daughter, Gail Robison, in Fillmore, Utah. She was born on Dec. 17, 1922, in Herman Township, Shawano County, to Alexander Stephen Hoffman and Selma Anna Heins Hoffman.

Evelyn was the oldest and only daughter in a family with five younger brothers, which earned her the nickname “Girlie” from her father. She loved reading and would often read with a light under the covers of her bed after her mother thought she was asleep. She attended Lyndhurst School until the eighth grade and graduated from Gresham High School in 1939. After high school her father supported her desire to attend Badger Business School in Green Bay, although many at the time believed that higher education would be wasted on a woman. The skills learned there proved invaluable to her however, as she worked for most of her adult life to help provide for her family.

Over the years, Evelyn worked for the Gresham Co-op, FWD in Clintonville, True’s MFG in Gresham and for over 25 years at the Gresham State Bank. She had a talent for bookkeeping and numbers and also maintained the books for Bohl Jewelers, her husband’s business in Clintonville. She grew up working on the family dairy farm and trucking company. She preferred to be out on the farm rather than inside doing housework. Evelyn could not only milk cows, but could back up a truck and trailer; a skill which was useful in getting the attention of a handsome young delivery driver named Alex Bohl, whom she later married on Dec. 1, 1945. The early years of their marriage were spent living in Milwaukee near Alex’s family. However, in 1949 they purchased their home in Lyndhurst, and worked together over the years expanding and improving it. There they raised their six children: son, Alan (Cindy) Bohl, of Gresham; daughters, Gail (Reed) Robison, of Fillmore, Utah, Gene (Stephen) Jensen, of Gresham, Donna (Kent) Crapo, of Flowell, Utah, Karen (Ernie) Meyers, of Black Creek; and son, Dean (Sharla) Bohl, of Springville, Utah.

After her retirement from Gresham Bank and after the death of her husband in October 1988, Evelyn began dividing her time between her home and family in Wisconsin and the homes of three of her children living in Utah. She enjoyed the milder Utah winters and spending time with the grandchildren who otherwise would not have known her well due to the distance between them. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all her life and took advantage of her time in Utah to perform many hours of temple service in the nearby temples and also was called to serve as a temple worker in Chicago in later years.

Throughout her life she served in her church in many capacities, including as a missionary in 1944 in the Central States Mission. She was later a Gospel doctrine instructor in her congregations’ Sunday school organization. Here her love of reading served her well as she spent many hours studying the scriptures as well as writings of the prophets and apostles of the church. She was also the choir director for many years and encouraged all her children to sing and develop a love of good music. She was an example of hard work and dedication. She had a deep faith in God and her Savior Jesus Christ and made sure that her children were brought up with that strong foundation of faith in their lives. Her family members have been the recipients of many blessings because of her prayers on their behalf whether they were aware of them or not.

She is survived by her six children and their spouses; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren with two more expected later this year; a great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Clyde “Ike” (Carol) Hoffman, Delbert (Kathy) Hoffman, Dan (Sue) Hoffman and sister-in-law Shirley Hoffman, wife of Glenn, all of the Gresham area; brother-in-law, Walter Bohl, of Milwaukee; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Bohl; her parents; an infant brother in 1921, Omar Alexander Hoffman; two younger brothers, Glen Hoffman and Sanford “Butch” Hoffman; as well as Butch’s wife, Carol (Otto) Hoffman. She was also preceded in death by Alex’s parents and 14 of his siblings and their spouses.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2015, at the Gresham LDS Chapel, 1230 Schabow St., in Gresham with Bishop Newell Haffner officiating. Visitation will be at the chapel on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow at the Roosevelt Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Olpin Stevens Funeral Home in Fillmore, Utah, for their care, as well as Swedberg Funeral Home in Gresham for handling the arrangements.
