Evelyn “Cookie” LeRoy, 69, passed away on Sept. 27, 2014, after a long battle due to an accident on Aug. 9, 2007, that changed the course of her life, leaving her in a quadriplegic state.

Cookie was born in Keshena and raised on her Grandma and Grandpa LeRoy’s homestead. She graduated from Gresham High School and then the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, receiving both her bachelors and masters’ degrees there. She encouraged and helped her daughters and nieces to finish their educations. Cookie enjoyed thrifting or “wheeling and dealing” to fill up her many storage spaces. Never in your life could you have known such a loving, caring and wonderful person. She was a living angel, always doing good deeds for those she encountered regardless if she knew them for years or just a few hours.

Cookie is survived by her children, Melanie (Larry) White, of Keshena, Lisa (Butch) Mohawk, of Tomahawk, Jessie (Alex) Blizzard, of South Carolina, Ruben (Kim) Arce, of Keshena, and Richard (Sunni) Annamitta, of Wausau; 19 grandchildren, Everlee (Travis), McKaylee, Cyrus, Kicking Bear, Brad, Tamara, Krista, Trevor, Makaylee, Leela, Mitchel, Aurora, Odessa, Ruben Jr., Alyia, Cyrus, Evelyn, Richie and Kesek; her siblings, Lena Ray LeRoy, Merlin “Twin Boy Rudy” (Edith) LeRoy, Marilyn “Twin Girl” LeRoy, Arvilla (Mike) LeRoy, Alan “Uncle Wiz or Lighty” LeRoy, Marcella (Emmitt) Kaquatosh, Donald “Mucka” LeRoy and Sherri “Nellie” LeRoy. She is further survived by her special friend, Ruthy Moede, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cookie was preceded in death by her parents, Kennedy and Mary “Bogue” (Dickie) LeRoy; twin sisters, Jean and Joan LeRoy, and another sister, Kathy LeRoy.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at the Red Springs Town Hall with the Rev. David Barrett officiating. Visitation will be at the town hall from Tuesday at 4 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Burial will be in the Red Springs Cemetery.

Cheryl Lynn Jacobs, 62, of Keshena, passed away on Sept. 30, 2014, in Appleton. Born on Sept. 20, 1952, in Salamanca, New York, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Reva (Dowdy) Jacobs.

Cheryl loved watching NASCAR and enjoyed cheering for her favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Cheryl enjoyed to cook, especially for her family. She was a loyal, generous, caring person who loved to spend time with her friends and family. She will be missed by all who knew her.

George F. Wilber, 89, of Oshkosh, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday morning, Oct. 1, 2014. He was born on Aug. 19, 1925, in Oshkosh, a son of the late Franklin and Alta (Sturm) Wilber.

George served his country in the U.S. Army soon after World War II. He married the former Marcella Rose Otradovec on May 26, 1951. She preceded him in death on Oct. 19, 1997. Together they had seven children, Thomas (Susan) Appleton, Marilyn (Mike) Roberts, of Oshkosh, Steven and friend Val Mulroy, of Hortonville, Judy Wilber, Mary (Larry) Dvoratchek, of Antioch, Illinois, Genevieve (John) Haidvogl, of Oshkosh, and Patricia (Kirk) Miller, of Valrico, Florida. He is further survived by a brother, Maynard Wilber, of Shawano; two sisters, Beverly Miller, of Green Bay, and Beulah (Verlyn) Spreeman, of Suring; 12 grandchildren, Angela, Crystal, Brandy, Michael, Ann, Amy, Paul, Kelly, Christopher, Aaron, Chance and Madison; five great-grandchildren, Alex, Anna, Ashlyn, Abbie and Ethan; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle; a sister, Barb Miller; and six brothers, Earl, Franklin Jr., Dave, Gene, Bernard and Roger.

George will be remembered for greatly enjoying coaching his daughters’ softball teams and for his Ph.D. in B.S.

James Jugenheimer as celebrant. Burial with full military honors will follow in Lake View Memorial Park Cemetery. Eugene “Gene” Breitrick, 83, Green Bay, passed away Oct. 1, 2014. Born on Oct. 3, 1930, he was the son of the late Everett and Emily Breitrick.

Gene graduated from Shawano High School Class of 1949. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. Gene married Carol Laehn on Sept. 5, 1953, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 2000. He worked at Pauly Cheese for 20 years. Gene was an active member of First United Church of Christ and volunteered for Feed the Hungry at his church and the Salvation Army. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gene loved music, the outdoors, Packers and, most of all times, spent with family.

He is survived by his six children, Toni (Dan) Derpinghaus, Dawn (Greg) Meyers, Wendi (Brian) Tomcheck, Scott Breitrick, Joel (Traci) Breitrick and Gene (Crystal) Breitrick; 12 grandchildren, Jason (Jenni) Derpinghaus, Traci (Chris) McKenzie, Amber (Bill) Schumacher, Jacob Meyers, Brad (Alicia) Tomcheck, Courtney (Brad) Shipman, Mattaja (Brendan) Maccaux, Matthew and Miranda Breitrick, Rachel, Holly and Alex Breitrick; seven great-grandchildren and one on the way, Willow and Auggie Derpinghaus, Anthony, Elizabeth and Emma McKenzie, and Kylie and Madison Schumacher; two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Gary Laehn, Bill (Jean) Laehn and Joan Laehn; best friends of over 70 years, Swede, Buzz and Dave.

Charlene Rae Helms, 64, of Appleton, formerly of Shawano, died on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at her home. Born on May 2, 1950, in Clintonville, she was the daughter of the late Ned and Arlette (Sether) Nehring.

Charlene was united in marriage to Harold Helms Jr. on Nov. 15, 1969, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marion. After attending beauty school, she became the owner and operator of her own salon in Shawano for many years, and also served as the church secretary at Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano for several years. She was very musically inclined, which she showcased in several arenas, such as singing in the Sweet Adelines and the choir at Zion, playing the bells in Zion’s Joyful Ringers and playing in the Marion Minutemen Community Band.

Charlene also enjoyed going on casino trips. She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Sherwood and former member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano, where she was extremely involved with the worship and music committee. Charlene will always be remembered for her love of entertaining, particularly during the holidays and family gatherings, where she featured the tasty morsels she created in her kitchen. She adored her family and was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who especially enjoyed cheering her kids on at their sporting and musical events. Her infectious laughter could be heard while playing cards, swimming and relaxing during the many times spent at the cabins in Pelican Lake and the Chain of Lakes.

Charlene is survived by her loving husband, Harold, of Appleton; two children, Brian (Terri) Helms, of Sherwood, and Karmen (Scott) Haldiman, of Appleton; four grandchildren, Martin and Mason Helms, Justin and Alison Sommer; her sister, Sherry (James) Klitz, of Neenah; her mother-in-law, Joyce (Harold Sr.) Helms, of Marion; and her brother-in-law, Roger (Sharon) Helms, of Kaukauna.

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents and her father-in-law, Harold Helms Sr.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano with the Rev. Gisele Berninghaus officiating. Visitation and a gathering of family and friends will be held at the church on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, from 4-8 p.m. and again at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Dorothy Winona Davids, “Aunt Dot,”passed to the spirit world Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at the Ella Besaw Center, Mohheconnuck Road, Stockbridge-Indian Reservation, Bowler, at the age of 91.

Dorothy was born on May 2, 1923, on the banks of Big Lake in the town of Red Springs to the late Elmer and Eureka (Jourdan) Davids. She attended schools at the Lutheran Indian Mission and Lakeside School, Shawano High School and graduated from Bowler High School in 1941. In 1945 she earned a bachelor's degree in education from Wisconsin State Teacher’s College in Stevens Point, being the first Native American to earn a degree there.

After 16 years as an elementary and junior high school teacher, where she encouraged her students to be involved in running her classroom, Dorothy entered the world of Native American causes, beginning with working with the National Congress of American Indians in 1961. She earned her Master of Science degree in education and human development from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1961, and also took classes at several other universities. She spent much of her professional life as an advocate for the Native American people and issues, having a wide personal knowledge of Native American literature and resources. She made a number of contributions toward the development of curriculum for and about native people. She helped establish the Arvid E. Miller Memorial Library-Museum in 1974. In 1985, Dorothy retired from the University of Wisconsin- Extension in Madison, where she had served 19 years as an associate professor in education and community development. During those years she had worked throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest with Native American communities.

After moving back to her own reservation in Red Springs, she and her friend and partner, Ruth Gudinas, established a consulting partnership called Full Circle: Education for a Diverse Society that focused on workshops and retreats in multicultural education. She received many awards over the years, including most recently alumni recognition as a lifelong educator from the UW Board of Regents.

Aunt Dot was an author, poet, teacher, educator, speaker, community developer, counselor, peacemaker, an activist for peace and justice and benefactor. Her wisdom, knowledge, generosity and kindness will be missed by all who knew her.

Dorothy is survived by her sisters, Marion (Bob) Shubinski and Corrine Kroening; her brothers, Elmer (Donna) Davids Jr. and Bruce (Joanne) Davids.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Bernice Miller Pigeon, Margaret Raasch and Lois Cornelius; her brother, Glenn Davids Sr.; and her dear friend and partner of 50 years who just passed away a month ago, Ruth Gudinas. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends, all who affectionately called her Aunt Dot.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at the Lutheran Church of the Wilderness with the Rev. Melinda Shriner officiating. Visitation was held at the church on Monday from 2-8 p.m. and on Tuesday after 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A celebration will be held Nov. 15, 2014, to honor and celebrate the lives of both Dorothy Davids and Ruth Gudinas at the Many Trails Banquet Hall, Gresham.

Jeanette Mae Rosenheim, of Pewaukee, formerly of Clintonville, passed away on Oct. 3, 2014, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.

Nicholas G. “Nick” Vandenberg, 63, of Appleton, formerly of Shawano, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at his home.

Nick was born on Feb. 14, 1951, in Appleton to Richard and Frieda (Skorie) Vandenberg. He spent his youth in Appleton and graduated from Appleton East High School. Nick was employed by and retired from Voith Paper. He enjoyed working on motorcycles, hunting and going to gun shows. Nick was a jack of all trades, always fixing something. Nick enjoyed cooking.

Nick is survived by his mother, Frieda Vandenberg; children, Nikki (John) Weaver and Jacob Vandenberg; granddaughter, Kitana Weaver; siblings, Harlan (Tammy) Vandenberg, Anne (Willie) Luedtke, Ellen (Jeffrey) Hager, Mark (Sandy) Vandenberg, Teresa (Rod) Freimuth, Rose (Bill) Adamietz and Karen (Loren) Doxtater; sister-in-law, Beverly Vandenberg; and former wife, Ellen Vandenberg. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Nick was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Patrick and Joseph (Linda) Vandenberg.

Margie Grace Eastburn, 87, Shawano, passed away peacefully on Oct. 5, 2014.

Margie was born April 14, 1927, at the family farm in Bartelme Township, Shawano County, the daughter of Herman and Ella (Giessel) Maas. She graduated from Bowler High School in 1945 and moved to Redding and then Blythe, California. On May 26, 1970, she married Russell Eastburn in Palm Desert, California, and then resided in Salinas, California, until returning to the Wisconsin family farm in 1983 to care for her elderly mother.

Margie is survived by her husband, Russell; three stepchildren, Brand Eastburn, Wyoming, Marette Nagel, California, and her sons Christopher and James, and Nancy Eastburn, Nevada, and her son Cole; and her sister, June Drake, Shawano.

She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous loving nieces and nephews from coast to coast.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Lester, Kennon and Merlin Maas; her sister, Myrtle Maas; and a nephew, Wynn Maas.

At Margie’s request, no services will be held.

Yvette Marie Reed, 48, of 121 Birch Ave., Gillett, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at Shawano Medical Center.

Yvette Reed, daughter of Philip and Janice (Heath) Reed, was born March 1, 1966, in Oconto Falls. She graduated from Suring High School in 1966. She attended Carroll College in Waukesha and was employed at an auditor for the Menominee Indian Tribe in Keshena. She married Lonnie Peterman on April 1, 2014. She enjoyed gardening, decorating her home, spending time boating, and doing art projects.

She was preceded in death by her son, Wyatt Schroeder.

She is survived by her husband; her parents; three children, Amadeus, Jared and Paige Schroeder, all of Gillett; three sisters, Michele Reed-Hudson, of Shawano, Jolene Reed, of Keshena, and Heather Trainor, of Chicago; one brother, Lowell Reed, of Keshena.

Mae N. Ankerson, 94, of Caroline, passed away Tuesday evening, Oct. 7, 2014, at Evergreen Care Center, Shawano.

Arvin J. Schultz, 75, died peacefully at home Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014. He was born June 7, 1939, to the late Frank and Agnes (Behling) in Shawano.

On Sept. 10, 1966, Arvin married Judy Mehlhorn at St. James Lutheran Church, Shawano. Arvin was an avid gardener who enjoyed time outdoors in the woods and fishing. He had a keen eye for genealogy, history and enjoyed sharing his sharp memory for details of his time spent growing up and living in Shawano. Arvin was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who took great joy in time at home with family.

Arvin was a 1958 graduate of Shawano High School. He completed technical training at the Appleton School of Vocational and Adult Education in 1961. After graduation he worked as a machinist, most recently working more than 25 years with C.A. Lawton Co. before retiring in 2003.

Arvin is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judy; his two sons, Aaron (Shannon) Schultz, of Cedarburg, and Jonathan (Angie) Schultz, of Green Bay; five grandchildren, August, Martha and Hazel Schultz, of Cedarburg, and Bailey and Sawyer Schultz, of Green Bay; his brother, Terry (Beverly) Schultz, of Shawano; mother-in-law, Lillian Mehlhorn, of Shawano; sister-in-law, Barbara Mehlhorn (Fran) McNeill, of Grayslake, Illinois; two nephews, Paul (Shannon) Schultz, and family of Green Bay, and Mehul (Cindy) Anjaria, of Corona, California.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, from 4-7 p.m., at Lyndahl Funeral Home, 1350 Lombardi Ave. Visitation will continue on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1731 St. Agnes Drive, with the Rev. Julia R. Deterville, 91, formerly of Oconto, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, Oct. 7, 2014, at Good Shepherd Care Center in Seymour, where she had been a resident for the past nine years.

Julia was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Oconto, a daughter of the late Lee and Loretta (Merline) Deterville. Julia attended the Oconto schools and, following graduation from high school, attended Marquette University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and teaching. She continued her education at Marquette, earning her master’s degree in social work. Julia had been employed at the Milwaukee Public School System for many years. She retired in 1983.

Julia was a devout Catholic during her lifetime. Her hobbies included world travel and volunteerism, including being a longtime volunteer for the Arthritis Foundation and also at St Joseph Hospital in Milwaukee for many years. She was a true philanthropist during the course of her life, always willing to help others. Her favorite charity was the Lakota Sioux Indian School. Reading and current events kept her mind sharp. Julia was always known for her great sense of humor. She also enjoyed gardening.

Left to cherish her memory is her special niece/caregiver, Mary (Dan) McGuire, of Shawano. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Julia was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Fred and Roc Deterville, and two sisters, Rita Naven and Loretta Lambert. Also preceding her in death are her roommate and travel companion, Dorothy Steinbrecher, and her dear friend, Muriel Woodside, and most recently, her lifelong friend and soul mate, Janet Tyson, who passed away in 2007.

A memorial Mass for Julia Deterville will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Shawano. The Rev. Luke Ferris will be the celebrant. Private family inurnment will take place at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery, Oconto. Relatives and friends may call at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.

Roger C. Utke, 93, who had resided in Shawano and Marinette, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014, at Manor Care in Shawano. He was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Shawano.

Roger was a graduate of Shawano High School, Class of 1938. He enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1939 and was assigned to the Great Lakes Training Center and later San Diego for hospital corpsman school. He advanced to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Pearl Harbor and was serving there during the Japanese attack in 1941. Later in World War II, he served aboard hospital ships in the South Pacific campaign.

On Aug. 19, 1945, he married the former Mildred G. DeSwarte. Roger continued duty assignments aboard ship after his marriage and was based in Seattle and San Francisco. He remained in the Naval Reserve and was called to active duty during the Korean War. After returning to Shawano, he was employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He also worked part-time as a driver for the former Karth-Kopitzke funeral home. Roger and Mildred moved in 1989 to Marinette, where he resided until moving into care facilities. Mildred preceded him in death on Oct. 28, 2007. In Marinette, he was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Roger is survived by a niece, Rose (Dave) Berkhahn, of Shawano; two grandnieces, Jodi (Matt) Ciesielczyk, of De Pere, and their children, McKenna and Jaden, and Cari (Jamie) Hillsberg, of Navarino, and their children, Aiden and Hadley; an aunt-in-law, Doris Hoffman, of Shawano; a cousin, Diane (Tom) Eggert, also of Shawano, and their children, Corey (Dustin) Beyer, Jason (Erika) Eggert and Jacob Eggert; and several other cousins.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Melvin DeSwarte, and his wife, Anne.

Friends may call at Zion Lutheran Church, 2714 James St., Marinette, from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Keith A. Kolstad officiating. Interment will be in the Southeast Wisconsin Veteran’s Cemetery in Union Grove.

Sandra I. Martin, 70, of Bowler, passed away on Oct. 9, 2014, at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Sandra was born July 14, 1944, in Wilmington, Delaware, to the late Frank and Agnes (Betterly) Richards. On July 13, 1987, Sandra was united in marriage to John J. Martin in Shawano. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Wilderness.

Sandra enjoyed playing cards, working crosswords, doing puzzles and camping. Her passion in life could be summed up in one word—family. She loved nothing more than spending time with her children and grandchildren. Sandra was a wonderful, caring, strong-willed woman with a big heart who will be missed by all who knew her.

Sandra is survived by her husband, John; her children, Anne (Roger) Malone, Vicki (Chris) Stevens, Bernard “Benny” (Cheri) Bowman Jr. and Samantha Grant, all of Bowler; her grandchildren, Tony, Roger Jr., Tiana, Donavan, Perry, Jeffrey II, Martin, Robby, Sonja, Nicole, Nate, Kristen, Kiera, Bailey, Randi, Cheyenne and Cheyenne Rose; 10 great-grandchildren, plus two on the way, and Grandma to many others; her siblings, Carol (Thomas) Gapko, of Cudahy, Cindy (Hector) Burgos, of Milwaukee, and Frank (Joan) Richards, of Missouri; brothers-in-law, Delbert Bowman, Robert “Bob” Vinz, Wayne (Jan) Martin, Bucky (Karen) Martin and Ron Martin; sisters-in-law, Vicki (Richard) Dalve, Audrey (Gerald) Frank and Peggy Draephal. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Sandra was preceded in death by her grandson, Jonathan Bowman; her parents; her siblings, Barbara Otte, Debby Ziegler, Nancy Bowman and Patty Vinz.

A visitation will be held at the Martin residence, N9448 Moh He Con Nuck Road, in Bowler from 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, until 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, and again at the Lutheran Church of the Wilderness from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at the Lutheran Church of the Wilderness with the Rev. Melinda Shriner officiating.

Miss Anna H. Brunner, 90, of Shawano, passed away quietly Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at Kindred Hearts of Shawano, where she had been a resident for the past two years.

Anna was born April 3, 1924, in Shawano, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Dillenburg) Brunner. Anna attended the Shawano schools, graduating from Shawano High School in 1942. Following high school, she attended St. Catherine’s College, St. Paul, Minnesota, Oshkosh State Teachers College, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Edgewood College in Madison, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in teaching.

Anna taught school in Tigerton, Waupun and, for three years as a lay teacher, at Edgewood College. She then traveled to Marrakech, French Morroco, Africa to teach. She finished her teaching career in the Shawano area.

Anna was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. She was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her two brothers, Martin Brunner and Michael (Darla) Brunner, both of Shawano. She also has one sister surviving, Mary Stieber, of Marathon. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Anna was preceded in death by four brothers, Anton, John, George and Frank Brunner. Four sisters, Frances Lieg, Elizabeth Jeske, Margaret Adams and Magdalen Bartz, also preceded Anna in death.

A Funeral Mass for Anna H. Brunner will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Shawano. The Rev. Luke Ferris will be the celebrant. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
