Leonard R. Koehler

Leonard R. Koehler, of the town of Wescott, Shawano, was blessed by God with 90 great years and polka danced his way into heaven on Sunday afternoon, June 8, 2014. His two sons, Ronnie and Allen, and many family and friends met him at the gates to welcome him home.

Leonard was born on June 8, 1924, a son of the late Fred Sr. and Martha (Arndt) Koehler. Leonard had a wonderful life. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bonduel. He was one of 10 children that God blessed Fred and Martha with. He lived on the family farm until he was 20. Then he told his pa that it was time for him to go make something of himself. He left to work for the railroad in Illinois, but realized after two weeks that it was not for him. He then moved to West Bend, where he started working at the Gehl Mfg. Company, a career that lasted 21 years. He met his future wife, Ida Parnitzke, at a local dance.

On Oct. 29, 1949, he was united in marriage to Ida at St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Saukville. Following their marriage the couple lived in West Bend until 1968. It was during that year that he decided to move his family to Shawano to purchase Lenny’s Bamboo Bar. He, along with his wife, owned and operated the Bamboo from 1968 until 1971. He then went to work at Hotz Manufacturing in Shawano until his retirement in 1986 at the age of 62. Leonard’s “retirement” lasted approximately two weeks when he decided to take a part-time job working at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. Leonard did retire 18 years later, at the age of 80.

Leonard lived a full life. He packed a lot of fun into 90 years, taking his wife to dances and playing many games of kickball and softball with his children. He hunted, fished and traveled all over the world with his family and friends. He enjoyed casino trips, dice and playing all kinds of card games. On hot summer days they played some of those games on the sandbar in Shawano Lake. Leonard never let any grass grow under his feet and was still active one week prior to his death.

He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle to all. Leonard taught his children many things to carry on his legacy. Hard work, learning to do things for themselves, play cards, listen to polkas and enjoy life. Most importantly, he taught faith in God and the importance of family first. Leonard loved his family with his whole heart and was not afraid to show it. He was proud of his family and would tell his children that nobody had a family like his. There was love and good times to be shared by all. Holidays were especially important to Leonard, packing 50 or so family members into the small house.

Music was always a part of any family gathering. Even in his final days, when asked by Pastor Andrada what instrument he played, Leonard was able to pull out his squeeze box and play a little tune. This put a big smile on the pastor’s face and even a bigger one on Leonard’s.

The family is grateful that God gave them extra time to reminisce about old times and to create new memories for their future. Blessed with 90 years of life on earth and comfort in knowing that he will be with his lord and savior in paradise. He was the rock and foundation of his family and will be in the hearts and thoughts of his family forever.

We bid you farewell, Leonard, until we meet again. When you pull the handle of slot machine, listen to a polka or play a card game, think of Leonard.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Ida; five daughters, Nancy Koehler, Shirley (Randy) Hacker, Diane (Bob) Seehafer and Sharon (Rick) Nuske, all of Shawano, and Terri (Tom) Watters, of Bowler; one son, Wayne Koehler (special friend, Scarlett Polley), of New London; 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

He is further survived by his brothers, Kenny (Dorothy) Koehler and Harley (Alice) Koehler, of West Bend; sister, Isabelle Westerfeld, of Bonduel; brother in-law, William Parnitzke, of Fredonia; and two sisters in-law, Hilda Heilgendorf, of Port Washington, and Anna Schmidt, of Mayville.

Just like his wife and children planned his birthday party, his two sons, Ronnie and Allen, are planning his coming home party along with his parents; grandparents; two granddaughters; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold (Dorothy), Ray (Betty), Arnie (Elsie), Fritz (Betty), Lester (Joyce); sister, Marcella (Oliver); sister-in-law, Irene; and brothers-in-law, John, Robert and Hilbert.

A celebration of the life of Leonard Koehler will be held on Thursday, June 12, at 1 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church, Shawano. Pastor Ted Andrada will officiate. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Shawano. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the hour of the service.

Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano is assisting the Koehler family with the service arrangements.

Online condolences may be shared at www.schroedermickelsonfuneralservice.com.

The family thanks all the families and friends for keeping Leonard and his family in their thoughts and prayers, and Pastor Andrada, Pastor Rinehard and Pastor Heilsberg for sharing God’s word with him and reminding him that he has eternal life to look forward to. Also thank you to ThedaCare at Home Hospice and the Friends of Hospice for all they did to assist Leonard and his family.
