William C. (Bill) Springborn Sr., “Springie,” 69, of the town of Richmond, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, March 22, 2014, with his loving family by his side.
Bill was born Oct. 12, 1944, in Shawano, the son of the late Ralph and Jeanette (Page) Springborn. Bill attended the Stony Hill Grade School and later the Shawano schools, graduating from Shawano High School in 1962.
Following school he joined the United States Army, where he served from 1963-1966 and was stationed in Korea.
Bill was a lifelong resident of the Shawano area and owned and operated Springie’s Log Inn, known for the best omelets in Shawano. He was also a talented carpenter and could build anything anyone asked him. In 1994, he along with his son, John, opened Springie’s Sleepless Nights in Thornton. He later went into the building and remodeling business with Jr Clark. He also made furniture and any type of cabinets a person wanted. If you showed Bill a picture, he would make it for you.
On June 16, 2001, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, the former Gayle Jandt. Bill built the couple a beautiful home on 40 acres of his parents’ home farm. That is where they spent the happiest years of his life, playing with his faithful companions, Tryke, Mylo and Ryder. Bill loved cutting wood with his son, Billy, and deer hunting with his grandchildren. Ice fishing with Rodger and Gary was his favorite pastime. When winter came Bill was out on the ice every day. Bill and Gayle rode a Harley Trike for 18 years and went on two wonderful trips with their good friends: Yellowstone National Park, with Ken and Diana Eggert, and the Smoky Mountains, with Paul and Sherie Huntington. Bill was a very outgoing man. He instilled in his children the true meaning of love and hard work. His kids were always his first priority, and he was equally proud of each of them.
He is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church-Stony Hill, where he served as trustee.
Bill will always live in the hearts of his devoted wife, Gayle; his loving children, Billy Jr. (Trisha) Springborn, of Shawano, John (Jennifer) Springborn, of Bonduel, Ronda (Randy Linde) Springborn, of Green Bay, and Tammy (Jeff) Curtin, of Shawano; his grandchildren, Haleigh and Wylee Springborn, Desireѐ, Jacob, Dylan and Owen Springborn, Karly, Savanna, and Jarrid Curtin; and his great-grandchildren, Braedy and Broedy Thiry-Curtin.
Springie is further survived by his sisters, Jackie (Wally) DuPont, of Menomonee Falls, Pat (George Schmidt) Schroeder, of Shawano, and Sandy Springborn, of Bowler; a brother, Gary (Rita) Springborn, of Shawano; his sisters-in-law, Cheryle Cheslock, Gloria (Jim) Cotter and Lois (Jim) Flaig; a special uncle and aunt, Earl “Bud” (Cleone) Springborn; mother of his children, Kathy Westerfeld; his former father- and mother-in-law, Elmore and Deloris Baumgarten; sister-in-law, Dorothy Baumgarten; brother-in-law, Wayne Singer; many nieces, nephews and tons of friends, especially his buddies at the Home Plate Café.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois Schmidt; brothers-in-law, Art Schmidt and Dave Schroeder; a niece, Melissa Springborn; a sister-in-law, Dawn Schutt; and his father- and mother-in-law, Clarence and Doris Jandt; brother-in-law, Butch (Elmore) Baumgarten; and sister-in-law, Bev Singer.
