
Thomas J. “Tom” Bartels, 70, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, Aug. 4, 2015, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay following a lengthy illness.
Tom was born on May 12, 1945, in Shawano, a son of the late Roland and Estella (Davis) Bartels. He attended the Shawano schools, graduating from Shawano High School in 1963. Following high school, Tom attended the Green Bay Vocational School, where he studied carpentry.
On Jan. 16, 1971, he was united in marriage to the former Judi Ann Roloff at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. The couple has lived in Shawano their entire married life. Tom was employed in the grocery industry from 1966 to 2005 as a produce manager. He later worked at Owens Door in Shawano until his retirement.
Tom coached at Sacred Heart Catholic School and Shawano Community Middle School. He coached boys and girls basketball and track for over 35 years. Tom is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council and on the Home and School Association. Tom was an avid record collector. He loved music from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s and collected LPs and 45s. He loved watching his grandkids’ sports, concerts and all their activities. In his younger years he enjoyed trout fishing. He has always been an avid Packer and Badger fan.
Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving family, wife, Judi, of Shawano; two daughters, Lisa (Rich) Andreas, of Sobieski, and Danielle (Nat) Hoeper, of Oshkosh; five grandchildren, Carson and Ava Andreas, and Cadence, Brooke and Benjamin Hoeper; two brothers, Larry (Joan) Bartels and Jim (Lynn) Bartels, both of Reedsburg; his mother-in-law, Elnora Roloff, of Shawano; his brother-in-law, Jeff (Mary) Roloff, of Shawano; and many nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Arleigh Roloff.
A funeral Mass for Tom will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 7, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. The Rev. Luke Ferris will be the celebrant. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials in his name for Shawano Middle School, the Sacred Heart Home and School Association or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
