George D. Ovans

George D. Ovans, 92, of Gresham, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2015, in Shawano.

George was born on Dec. 13, 1922, in Dorchester, to the late James and Lucille (Boyle) Ovans. He enlisted in the United States Army and served as a paratrooper during World War II. George was united in marriage to Bernadine Hoffman on May 23, 1951, in Gresham. She preceded him in death in 1995.

George lived in the Gresham area most of his life. He owned and operated a mink farm and worked in construction for many years before his retirement. George was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church, a former Lions member and a member of the Gresham American Legion Post 390. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to Canada with his brother. George loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

George is survived by his children, Kevin (Laura) Ovans, of Clintonville, Julaine Bera, of Kaukauna, and Jeanine (William) Hebert, of Gresham; seven grandchildren, Loni (Jesse) Glatz, Matthew (Vana) Ovans, Cindy (Tony) Hoier, Leslie (Luke) Bowers, Bill (Andrea) Hebert, Ashley Hebert and Daniel Hebert; as well as eight great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sisters, Mary Ewan, of Rhinelander, and Lucille (Lloyd) Ward, of Gresham, and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Ovans, of Spencer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadine, one son, Lynn, his parents, as well as four brothers and one sister.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2015, at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Gresham with Rev. David McElroy, O. Praem, officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by Gresham American Legion Post 390. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

The family wishes to thank present and past caregivers at Evergreen Nursing Home and ThedaCare at Home Hospice for the wonderful care of our dad.
