Gene Leroy Weed, 71, passed away at his home in the town of Grover on April 20, 2014.

Born Feb. 8, 1943, son of the late Asa and Orlene (Joy) Weed, he graduated from Marinette High School in 1961. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. On March 9, 1968, he married the former Carolyn Johnson. Gene retired from Graetz Manufacturing, where he was employed for 44 years.

Gene’s greatest joy was helping horses, and the horse world lost a true friend. He was a farrier for more than 40 years, helping many horses recover from hoof problems to become champions. He trained and raced horses in Wisconsin during the bush track years. Gene and his granddaughter, Katie, gamed many years in Norway, Mich., Marinette and Oconto counties. The horse shows were special because of his many friends and family.

Gene is survived by his wife, Carolyn; a daughter, Cheri; his grandchildren, Katie and Nick; four brothers, Robert (Sharon), of Pulaski, Vern (Pam) and Don (Kathy), of Porterfield, and Ken (Judy), of Peshtigo; many nieces and nephews; and Nickers.

He is also survived by special friends Don and Shannon, Joe and Sandy, Kathy, Rylee, John and Julie, Kim, and Kevin and Kimberly.

Family and friends may call Thursday, April 24, at Berth & Rosenthal Funeral Home in Peshtigo from 3 p.m. until the time of a memorial service at 6 p.m. The Rev. Kevin Dembinski will officiate.
