
Irene E. Mavis, 81, Wittenberg, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at the Homme Home of Wittenberg under the care of AseraCare Hospice Services.
She was born on May 9, 1932, in Birnamwood, the daughter of the late Herman and Margaret (Joas) Leider.
On Aug. 29, 1953, Irene was united in marriage to Carl Frederick William Mavis at Trinity Lutheran Church, Birnamwood. He preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 2005. Irene and Carl farmed in Wittenberg until 1977. Irene was a very active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. She volunteered her time to cook for events, cook funeral luncheons and worked with the youth group. She was very talented and made many beautiful wedding and birthday cakes and quilts. Irene loved spending time with her family, and her grandchildren meant the world to her.
Survivors include two daughters, Karla Grulkowski, Wittenberg, and Kelle (Kelly) Matz, Schofield; four grandchildren, Benji (Kelly) Grulkowski, Stevens Point, Alan (Becki) Grulkowski Jr., Sheboygan Falls, Kaleb Matz, Stevens Point, and Brenda (Christopher Fuss) Matz, De Pere; four great-grandchildren, Victoria Butkus, Tony Butkus, Kaila Grulkowski, Carter Butkus; and two brothers, Harold Leider and Donald Leider, both of Birnamwood. She is also survived by other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Irene was preceded in death by one brother, Eugene Leider; sisters-in-law, Sandy Leider and Joan Mavis; brothers-in-law, Harvey Mavis and Donald Kutz; and sons-in-law, Alan Grulkowski and Steven Shest.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. The Rev. Michael Larson will officiate. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Wittenberg. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
