Jacob Jerome Maskewit Sr., 49, of Keshena, was called to the spirit world on Oct. 10, 2015, in Green Bay, at Bellin Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Jacob suffered with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare disease that attacks the nervous system. He was born on Nov. 23, 1965, in Antigo, the son of Carl J. “Chummy” Maskewit Sr. and the late Sharon (Winneshiek) Maskewit. As a young man, Jake called Door County his home, until he moved to the Menominee Indian Reservation, spending most of his life in the Keshena area. Jake was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, shanging, walking, watching the Packers and spending quality time with his great-nieces and great-nephews. In his younger years, he boxed for the Menominee Tribal Police Boxing Club, appearing in the National Geographic magazine in August 1974. He appeared in a PBS film that showed his skills of trapping with his father and brother.
Jake took pride in taking care of his sister, Linda. Linda quoting Jake, “I love you my sister. Good night and see you in the morning.” This was said every evening and at daylight. “Good morning, my sister” — day to day I will carry his greetings of love.
Jacob will be sadly missed by his family and friends, including his son, Jacob J. (Maskewit) Zhuckkahosee, of Florida; his daughter, Angel Tomow, of Shawano; his father, Carl Sr., of Keshena; his sisters, Linda (Raphael Sr.) Boivin and Mary (Daniel) Tomow, both of Keshena, and Sharon Maskewit, of South Dakota; his brothers, Dale (Karen) Boivin Jr., John Sr. and Mitchell (Elizabeth) Maskewit III, all of Keshena; nieces and nephews, John Maskewit Jr., Janice, Jody (special friend Earl Wayka), Kandice (Alan), Vivianne, Dale III, Joy (special friend Jeremy Peters) Kitson, Danielle (special friend Mitchell Bailey) Tomow, Dorla, Toni, Melisa, and Adam; his great-nieces and great-nephews, Jade, Natalie Aubri, Raphael Jr. (special friend, Dakota Madosh), Madeline, Joseph, Sonny, Leila, DeJa, Jordyn, Kaiden, and Daniel Tomow Jr. He is further survived by a great-great-niece, Lyneesa Mendez; cousins, Myrtle (Steve) Kitson and John A. Boyd, III, whom he called “Brother”; aunts and uncles, Wendell “Windy” Corn, Donald “Buddy” Maskewit, Elizabeth Gonzalez, Delores Edgeton, Kathleen Sammons, Cynthia (Theodore) Gauthier, Dorothy (Joseph) Smith, and his most admired aunt, Laura Maskewit; as well as his special, dear friend, Valarie (AKA Big Kahuna) Waupoose, LOL.
Jacob was preceded in death by his wife, Debra; his daughter, Melissa Jane; his mother, Sharon (Winneshiek) Maskewit; and one brother, Carl Jonson Maskewit Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano with the Rev. Joel Jores officiating. Visitation will be at the Carl Maskewit Sr. residence, N276 Max Martin Road, in Keshena from noon Monday until the procession leaves for the funeral home on Thursday. There will be a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
